BNRRN joins the Every Action Counts Community Support Programme

BNRRN has recently signed up to Defra’s Every Action Counts Community Support Programme. The Community Sector Coalition (CSC) has been asked by Defra to run a new initiative called Every Action Counts. This is a programme seeking to engage national and local voluntary and community sector organisations across England in work to protect and improve our environment.

The aim of Every Action Counts is to use the wide and varied networks within the Voluntary and Community sector, like BNRRN to reach out to local communities in every part of England. The programme starts this autumn and will run until March 2009.

What is Every Action Counts?

The programme is set up to encourage and support community organisations to work on issues such as:

  • Energy and climate change

  • Transport

  • Waste minimization and recycling

  • Local environmental improvements

  • Fair trade and ‘ethical shopping’

What will Every Action Counts do?

  1. There is a scheme to support ‘community champions’ by recruiting hundreds of local community activists to lead change in their own groups and neighbourhoods

  2. There is a national programme which will help and support national and regional voluntary and community bodies to integrate work on these issues into their existing work programmes and to draw up their own action plans for sustainable development

  3. There will be an innovate website to encourage thousands of community organisations to sign up and take action. This site will also provide information and advice

  4. there will be a training programme which will help community workers engage with these issues and help improve the environment in the areas where they work

  5. ‘Good practice’ by community groups will be identified, assessed and promoted to help other groups learn from each other

  6. A set of resources and support materials will be available on the website and as printed publications.

BNRRN’s Director, Bolaji Bank-Anthony adds:

‘BNRRN will provide on-going information and support to our member organisations in implementing this work. We will use this newsletter and e-bulletins to keep you updated. We will also organise a seminar to further inform you of the project as well as providing you with the opportunity to become involved. Revitalising our neighbourhoods are integral to the regeneration process and I am you will all agree that our environment is very important and it is up to each and every one of us to ensure that sustainable improvements are made. We hope that the majority of our members will get involved in this initiative’.

BNRRN’s role in delivering this new project is to raise awareness amongst you are members and your wider communities about how you can make a difference and how changes you make will impact on your local areas in reducing crime, improving public health and revitalising neighbourhoods.

What we need from you is your views on what sustainable development means for you and your community.
