Local Area Agreements – Reducing Health Inequalities

In March 2006, the London Health Commission (LHC) agreed to develop a programme of work which is aimed at raising the profile of equality schemes that exist within public sector organisations. The LHC firmly believes that such schemes already demonstrate their potential to narrow health inequalities and therefore should be promoted.

A new pilot is currently being tested where LAAs will be used to deliver on the government’s duty of well being, improving social, economic and environmental conditions for Londoners.

The Black, Asian and minority Ethnic (BAME) Health Forum, set up by the LHC has identified the need to produce a toolkit to support London boroughs in various activities aimed at reducing health inequalities and also influence their LAA.

It is envisaged that the toolkit will include recent evidence and good practice examples already identified in the work of existing equality schemes.

The toolkit will support initiatives around the 4 LAA blocks:

  • Children and Young People

  • Safe and Stronger Communities

  • Healthier Communities and Older People

  • Economic Development and Enterprise

BNRRN’s Director is a member of the London Health Commission’s BAME health forum and will ensure that any good practice identified by our members is fed into this work.
